Why to Watch the 2023 Ohio State Football Spring Game
This is a must-watch spring game for Buckeye fans. Ohio State comes into the spring game likely still reeling from a loss in the Peach Bowl that was heavily influenced by poor officiating.
QB Competition. With CJ Stroud headed to the NFL, Ohio State’s starting QB role is wide open, and the spring game will be an important stage for Ryan Day to assess who should start under center. Both former 5 star recruit Kyle McCord, who Ryan Day recruited over Wolverines starter JJ McCarthy, and a 5 star in the 2022 On3 rankings, Devin Brown, will play with the first team offense. Even though he is a year younger than McCord, Brown could win the starting QB job due to his mobility, a feature that CJ Stroud’s game lacked until the Georgia football game.
Offensive Line. With Paris Johnson and Dawand Jones headed to NFL and projected as first-round picks, it will also be interesting to see who plays tackle. It’s likely Josh Fryar is a starter, perhaps at left tackle, but I want to have a look at highly recruited Tegra Tshabola to see if he is ready to live up to his recruiting ranking. If Tshabola could lock down left tackle, and Fryar could play on the right side, Ohio State will have another dominant offensive line this season.
Defense. Of course, the defense will also be a big story. Many Ohio State fans, myself included, felt that Jim Knowles, OSU’s first year defensive coordinator, was way too aggressive with some of his cover 0 play calling against Michigan and Georgia, and feel that it cost the Buckeyes a national championship. Who will start at cornerback and safety with all the transfer portal activity? Some Buckeye fans feel that Lathan Ransom should play behind Sonny Styles and Kye Stokes, who flashed considerable talent at last year’s spring game. It’s likely you can slot transfer players Davison Igbinosun (Ole Miss) and Ja’Had Carter (Syracuse) as starters in a defensive backfield that struggled mightily last season.
