Game Analysis and Prediction

In the last 21 matchups, Ohio State’s record against UM is 17-4.

However, last year, Michigan absolutely gashed Ohio State in the run game, finishing with 297 yards and 6 TDs on their way to a dominating win. If Michigan runs the ball like that again this year, they win The Game for the second year in a row, it’s that simple.

In fact, the last time Ohio State beat Michigan, despite being out rushed, was 1994. The team that has won the rushing battle has won the last 20 in this series.

Watch Michigan’s early offensive possessions closely. If Blake Corum is routinely getting loose into the Ohio State defensive backfield, it could be a long day for the Buckeyes. The problem for the Wolverines is the injury Corum suffered last week versus Illinois. If he does take the field, which is questionable, many believe Corum will be severely diminished. To add insult to injury, Donovan Edwards, Michigan’s talented backup running back, is rumored to be dealing with an injured hand, and sat out last week’s game.

The Buckeye defensive line is loaded with talent, and college football has evolved in the last 20 years. If the Buckeyes can slow down the Michigan run game, and force 3rd and long for UM’s talented, but often erratic QB, Ohio State could jump out to a lead in The Game, putting Harbaugh and company in a position they haven’t been in all year long against a strength of schedule that ranks close to last in all of NCAAF.

This year’s Michigan defense, while stout, isn’t last year’s UM defense, which was led by a generational talent in Aidan Hutchinson. Even in defeat, and after giving up 5 sacks, Ohio State threw for 400 yards in last year’s game. Michigan hasn’t played an offense that is anywhere close to Ohio State’s this season, and the one team that comes close, Maryland, gave the Wolverines everything they could handle, and then some.

Without David Ojabo and Aidan Hutchinson in his face, watch to see whether CJ Stroud has time to throw, a luxury he didn’t have last year in Ann Arbor. If he does, it’s unlikely Michigan’s defensive backs will be able to stay with Marvin Harrison Jr. Emeka Egbuka, Julien Fleming, and TE Cade Stover. Ohio State’s OL has struggled at times with run blocking, but has largely excelled in pass protection. Even if Blake Corum gets going, Ohio State may be able to overpower Michigan with the pass game alone.

Ultimately, we think Ohio State’s talent on the defensive line will slow down Michigan’s running game just enough, and the Buckeye WR room will have a field day on the way to a 48-24 win.
